En Chile, inviting someone over to eat opens the door to more than sharing a meal. Food connects us through our guatitas llenas + corazónes contentos in conversation, an emotional intercambio of experiences + memorias.
gotxs seeks to create visible and accessible representation for South American graphic artists in Portland —one of the richest printing communities in the U.S., but also one of the least culturally diverse. gotxs blends graphic art with food traditions in an exhibit that offers a visceral and emotional connection between the artists who cannot be present and the greater Portland community. By providing samples of the artists’ favorite dishes with each print, we engage multiple senses to offer a taste of the context in which it was made. Experiencing art with eyes + mouths provides an accessible, complex understanding of our Southern vecinxs, without the limitations of language. letra chueca’s work fosters a connection of Latinxs in Portland with where we came from—something that is integral to the decolonization of ourselves as children of migration and in the process of redefining our representation.
